More than two dozen have died in the unrest stemming from anger over living conditions and heavy-handed police tactics. The rallies began last week, in response to a plan to raise taxes.

The signs in the streets of Bogota are anything but conciliatory. After the government withdrew its plans to raise taxes, Colombians say it must do more to improve social equality as a whole.

They want it to tackle poverty, to secure a better education and health system. And they’re calling for an end to police violence – and justice for the victims. At least 26 demonstrators were killed after peaceful protests against a tax reform were met with deadly force.

Human rights groups called the police’s violent response “alarming.” President Ivan Duque called for dialogue in a bid to defuse tensions.

Duque is due to meet with protest group leaders next week. But they are skeptical – saying similar talks after past demonstrations accomplished little.
